What is Gelmix?

Gelmix is the first USDA organic thickener for breast milk and formula specifically formulated for pediatric use in America. Consisting of an off-white fine powder, Gelmix is tasteless, odorless and smooth when dissolved. Gelmix utilizes carob bean gum, an ingredient used for decades to thicken infant milk in Europe and a healthier alternative to thickening with rice cereal.

Why Thicken Liquids?

Thickening liquids is sometimes recommended for infants with spit-up or vomiting, often present in conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease. Thickening is also recommended for children and adults with swallowing difficulties, present in conditions such as dysphagia. Always consult a physician before thickening liquids to ensure it is appropriate for your individual needs.

Why Gelmix?

Gelmix is free of common allergens including corn, gluten, wheat, soy, whey, lactose and casein. Gelmix is also fat free and low in calorie. Using considerably less volume to thicken effectively compared to cereals and other commercial thickeners, Gelmix preserves the nutritional balance of the diet that requires thickening.

The Power of Carob Bean Gum

Gelmix harnesses the properties of organic carob bean gum, also known as locust bean gum, a natural food thickener, emulsifier and stabilizer used in a variety of everyday foods, such as cream cheese, ice cream and salad dressing.  It has been used in Europe for decades as a thickener in the preparation of infant formula. American and European Societies for Pediatric Gastroenterology recognize carob bean gum as a thickening option for breast milk and formula.

Gelmix Compared to Cereals

Historically in North America, cereals have been used to thicken formula, particularly for infants with excessive spit-up. However, cereals often cause constipation, add excessive calories and displace the natural diet with lots of carbohydrates.

Gelmix does not cause constipation like cereals do. Gelmix only adds 10 calories for every 4-6 fl. oz. – that’s 5 times less calories than cereals! Only 2.4g of Gelmix is added for every 4-6 fl. oz., in comparison to 1 tablespoon of rice cereal added for every 1-2 fl. oz.  The small amount of Gelmix needed to achieve the desired consistency results in a very low displacement, which means your infant gets more of the nutrients they need from their natural diet and not a bunch of unnecessary bulk.

Cereals are simply not suitable thickeners for breast milk.  Cereals are broken down by maternal digestive enzymes within minutes, thus losing their thickening properties. Gelmix mixes easily with breast milk and maintains its viscosity over time.


Gelmix consists of only three ingredients: Organic Tapioca Maltodextrin, Organic Carob Bean Gum and Calcium Carbonate. Manufactured in Florida, Gelmix is made with the highest quality standards and from the finest grade of organic ingredients. With your safety in mind, each batch undergoes a series of quality control tests and comes with double tamper-proof seals.

Not for use with infants under 6 pounds and/or born pre-term currently under a corrected 42 weeks gestational age. Do not use if galactosemia or allergy to galactomannans is suspected. Stop using if rash or other allergic reaction develops, and consult a physician immediately. Not intended for use with pre-thickened formulas or other thickening products. May cause transient gassiness in first two weeks of use. To avoid, always start with lowest dosage required for desired thickness. It is not recommended to use honey like consistency with infants and children less than 1 year old. Gelmix is a dietary supplement, not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
